Owner-operators of Popoara Ocean Breeze Villas, Maria is a direct descendant of the original settlers of Aitutaki 28 generations ago: Ru, his four brothers, and twenty young maidens.
Popoara is from the pandanus trees (Ara) growing on the property and Popo is the trunk of the Ara tree which Ru and his brothers used to haul their canoe over the reef when they arrived. Almost all of the staff are local Aitutakian and many of them are related to Maria.
